This "Sickle Cell Anemia peripheral blood smear" (taken by Ed Uthman and used under CCPL) shows sickled red blood cells. "Sickling" describes the crescent moon shape. Sickle cell anemia and its interaction with malaria is a classic example of the heterozygote advantage. Read more about this example and others in Michaela's full paper on overdominance.

This image "Popping beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)" by Crops for the Future (used under CCPL) shows the diversity of coloring in Phaseolus vulgaris. Michaela's experimental design proposal outlines one way of studying the genetic diversity of plant defense. Read about trichomes and genetics in her full paper.

Experimental Design ProjectPhaseolus vulgaris, the common bean, is a primary source of nutrients, especially protein, for many human cultures and populations. Trichomes have been recognized and studied as both chemical and structural defense characters in many plant populations, including the common green bean... (more)
